Virginia Commonwealth University's College of Humanities and Sciences is pleased to welcome the Department of Focused Inquiry into its academic community. Previously housed in VCU’s University College, the department will move into the College of Humanities and Sciences in January.
"The integration of Focused Inquiry into the College of Humanities and Sciences marks an exciting enhancement of our commitment to student success,” said Catherine Ingrassia, Ph.D., dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences. “Their innovative approach to general education—with sustained learning communities and emphasis on critical thinking skills—aligns perfectly with our mission to provide transformative educational experiences. We're particularly excited to collaborate with Focused Inquiry faculty, benefit from their diverse expertise, and introduce students to major departments earlier in their academic journey."
The Department of Focused Inquiry currently offers small, seminar-style classes for first- and second-year students as part of the general education curriculum at VCU and focuses on developing skills in communicative fluency, ethical reasoning, global and cultural responsiveness, information literacy, and problem solving in a collaborative learning environment. Students remain with the same classmates and instructor for two semesters (one class per semester) and explore a shared course theme. This structure helps ease the transition from high school to college, and allows students to form close bonds with their peers and instructors.
“We are excited to join the College of Humanities and Sciences, a move that creates natural synergies between Focused Inquiry and the college's diverse academic departments,” said Katy Hanggi, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Focused Inquiry. “This integration enables our faculty to more fully leverage their expertise in fields like history, English, and gender, sexuality, and women's studies. Students will benefit from stronger connections between their Focused Inquiry coursework and their broader studies in the College, creating a more cohesive and enriching academic experience.”
This enhanced integration means first-year students can better understand how the foundational skills they develop in Focused Inquiry—from analytical writing to research methods—directly support their success in major-specific coursework. Faculty from both Focused Inquiry and major departments will work together to ensure a seamless transition between general education requirements and specialized study, creating a more intentional pathway to academic achievement.
