The College of Humanities and Sciences announces the retirement of Dr. Sally Hunnicutt, professor of chemistry and associate dean for faculty and academic affairs in sciences and mathematics, at the end of this month. Sally has served in the dean's office for four years and has been an invaluable member of our leadership team in the dean’s office and throughout the college. Prior to her time in the dean’s office, Sally was a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry, where she also served as associate chair. Her career at VCU has spanned 27 years.
As a faculty member, Sally was an early champion in bringing innovative techniques for student learning to the large science classroom: POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) made a tremendous difference in the lives of many students in CHS. Her stellar teaching was recognized with both the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences Teaching Award in 2012 and, in 2014, the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award.
Her dedication to academic excellence, student success and faculty development has left an indelible mark on our college. Under her guidance, we have seen significant improvements in curriculum design, pedagogical research and interdisciplinary collaborations. And of course the STEM building, which includes the Sally Hunnicutt Science Hub, would never have opened without her passion, vision and dedication.
While we will deeply miss her presence in the dean's office, we are grateful for Sally's years of service and the lasting legacy she leaves behind. Please join us in thanking her for her contributions and wishing her a fulfilling retirement.
