AI Projects and Labs at CHS
Across the College of Humanities and Sciences, faculty, students, and partners are actively exploring the role of artificial intelligence in teaching, learning, and research. The initiatives highlighted here represent distinct, visible efforts that bring together interdisciplinary perspectives, applied practice, and critical inquiry to advance how AI is understood and used.
These projects and labs are part of a broader and growing landscape of work across CHS, where many additional efforts are underway within departments, programs, and individual courses.

Additional AI Work Across CHS
Across the College of Humanities and Sciences, work in artificial intelligence has extended beyond formal labs and initiatives into courses, research, and public scholarship. Faculty developed new humanities courses that examined the nontechnical dimensions of AI, helping students engage critically with its ethical, philosophical, and societal implications. This momentum continued with the introduction of the AI Studies minor, alongside complementary efforts such as practical AI coursework exploring its intersection with mass media, which expanded applied learning opportunities for students.
CHS faculty also contributed to broader public conversations about AI through research and expert analysis. Work examining the risks of political AI chatbots highlighted concerns related to misinformation, bias, and the potential impact on democratic processes. These contributions reflected a sustained commitment to studying AI not only as a technological development, but as a force shaping culture, communication, and society.
Collectively, these efforts have contributed to a broader institutional focus on AI across VCU. As highlighted in the CHS annual report, artificial intelligence has influenced teaching, research, and innovation across the university, with CHS playing a central role in advancing both critical inquiry and applied understanding.
AI Literacy at CHS
CHS has established a comprehensive approach to AI literacy through general education and interdisciplinary study. That means more options for students to explore AI across the curriculum.
