Dear alumni and friends,

When I visited Richmond in January for an interview, one of my first observations was that the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences has a vibrant and deeply dedicated community. The faculty, students and staff are engaged, thoughtful and committed — all traits that will sustain the College as we face an unprecedented learning and research environment in the coming academic year. As a newcomer, I am encouraged and energized by the faculty and staff and their obvious devotion to research and teaching for our students.

As the new dean, I have been thinking a great deal about the role of the College amid the pandemic and the recent protests against racial inequities. My view is that our mission has not changed, but the times demand that we pursue that mission with greater urgency. I look forward to working with you, our alumni and supporters, to build a network and resources for our students and faculty so we can continue that important work.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Malat, Ph.D.
Dean
VCU College of Humanities and Sciences
