Welcome to VCU and the College of Humanities and Sciences. We are glad you have chosen to join us this fall. We also recognize this fall will be different than your typical college experience. With that in mind, we’ve complied this guide to answer any questions you might have and to help you with your educational journey.

Online Learning at CHS

First time taking an online class? No worries. Sure, there are challenges, but there’s also a lot of benefits that come from being online. We reached out to students in the College to get their take on online learning, how to stay engaged through the screen and what advice they would give to first timers.

Fall Semester Course Definitions

This fall, we will offer a number of course formats for the wellbeing and safety of our students. Please use these descriptions to help you decide what courses fit your schedule and comfort level.

Online/Synchronous Instruction
A course that has no in-person requirement. 100% of the instructional content is delivered using electronic means. All aspects of the course to include instruction, assignment submission and faculty hours, are hosted in an online/remote environment (i.e., learning management system). Required to take place on a specific day and time.
Online/Asynchronous Instruction
A course that has no in-person requirement. 100% of the instructional content is delivered using electronic means. All aspects of the course to include instruction, assignment submission and faculty hours, are hosted in an online/remote environment (i.e., learning management system). Not required to take place on a specific day and time.
Hybrid/Flexible Synchronous
A minimum of 30% of the course time is completed by the instructor and student physically sharing the same physical space/location at the same time. The remainder of the course time is completed in an online/remote environment (i.e, learning management system). Required to take place on a specific day and time. (Live stream provided to give students flexibility to interact not in-person.)

A course that is completely in-person. 100% of the instructional content is delivered in a physical location. A course may include use of a learning management system, electronic reading assignments or online discussions to supplemental learning.

Please keep in mind that in order to comply with safety measures, all courses with an enrollment of 50 or more students will be taught entirely in a remote/online format.
