Harris's research examines the multiple dimensions of African diasporas with a specific focus on race, religion and hip hop.

Travis Harris, Ph.D., is actively involved in the Black liberation movement and does not separate his freedom work from his academic work. In short, Harris studies Black people. His research examines the multiple dimensions of African diasporas with a specific focus on race, religion and hip hop. As an interdisciplinary scholar he analyzes these phenomena across the complex layers of Black life.

Harris is the political education director of the International Black Freedom Alliance and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hip Hop Studies. He teaches an array of courses that cover the many aspects of diasporic life.

Harris earned his doctorate in 2019 at the College of William and Mary from the American Studies Program with a concentration in Africana studies.
